Hopefully every landlord that sees the title of this post will immediately know that to run an ad with that title to rent out their property would be in violation of the Fair Housing Laws. Apparently not though unfortunately.
According to a recent report by the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) there are literally thousands of illegal housing advertisements appearing with impunity on the Internet every day with titles such as the title of this post.
Fair housing centers and the government saw a 30 percent increase in complaints of discrimination against families with children in 2008. NFHA and 27 private fair housing organizations around the country identified more than 7,500 discriminatory advertisements in every state and Washington D.C. and filed 1,000 discriminatory advertising complaints with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the past year alone.
Landlords need to be sure their ads to rent property are not in violation of fair housing laws. I think in many instances ads are in fact discriminatory when it really wasn’t the intention, nor practice, of the landlord. Those landlords are quite uptight. Can they be punished by law or something for unjust discrimination?
Clearly there are many landlords that do end up facing lawsuits from private organizations such as NFHA or by agencies of the United States Government as a result of alleged discrimination. I publish information on many of them on this blog to help heighten landlords awareness of fair housing laws as well as remind them the repurcussions of not adhering to them.
